Velocity waves in 21 centimeter self-absorption toward the Taurus molecular complex

Description

Large recorrelation amplitudes have been found in the velocity field of absorbing hydrogen in the Taurus complex. Scale lengths are typically 16 pc, and velocity modulation amplitudes 1.5 km/s. These are interpreted as velocity waves which are probably tightly coupled to, or even resonant with, magnetic field line vibrations. These waves dominate the turbulence within the region. It is suggested that these strange kinematic properties are related to the mysterious origin of Gould's belt. 22 references
