Feasibility study of the Mo-99 production in Triga Mark III reactor

  • 1. Instituto Nacional de Investigaciones Nucleares, Mexico City (Mexico)

Description

The main aspects of a feasibility study, aimed at production 20 Ci per week of Mo-99 by irradiation of targets in the TRIGA Mark III Reactor at the Mexican Nuclear Center, are discussed. Several options for both type and composition of the targets, as well as irradiation positions in the core are analyzed. Preliminary studies indicated that UA1 x type targets, positioned at the reactor B ring, is the most feasible option. However, further theoretical and experimental work will be necessary in order to determine the short and long term implications of replacing fuel elements in the core with targets to be irradiated.
