Intercomparison of liquid waste treatment methods
Description
A programme of work has been successfully completed to assess the performance of Electrochemical Ion Exchange (EIX) and seeded crossflow ultrafiltration (UF) in decontaminating low level liquid wastes from the Tihange Pressurised Water Reactor in Belgium and intermediate/high level reprocessing wastes from Saluggia and Casaccia in Italy. Inactive and trace active laboratory experiments provided the basic process design parameters which were tested on-site with batches of real waste. These confirmed the small-scale tests, but highlighted problems with intractable or atypical batches of waste. The UF trials showed that, by appropriate choice of absorber materials and operating conditions, removal of the species of prime concern (Co, Sr, Cs, Pu) and reduction of total activity to low levels can be achieved for both types of waste.
