Occurrence of current layers when a magnetic field is deformed in a perfectly conducting medium

Description
The formation of magnetic-field discontinuities (current layers) is treated in the quasisteady evolution of an originally continuous irrotational magnetic field frozen into a low-density hot plasma. This problem is of interest for the theory of magnetic heating of the solar corona and the explanation of the mechanism for flare processes in the atmosphere of the sun. A simplified model is used to show that the magnetic-field topology (the presence of separatrix lines or surfaces in it) has a crucial role in the appearance of such singularities. 17 refs., 10 figs
