The VLQ detector at H1: construction, operation, track reconstruction and measurement of elastic, diffractive J/ψ production at low Q2

Description

A special detector, the VLQ (Very Low Q2) was installed in the H1 experiment in May 1998. It is intended for the investigation of lepton-nucleon scattering processes with low virtualities Q2 of the exchanged photon. This detector comprises two identical modules, which each consist of a silicon-tracking detector and a scintillator-tungsten calorimeter. The modules are mounted above and below the beam pipe. The VLQ detector allows the beam lepton to be tagged and measured at small scattering angles. In this thesis the procedure of track reconstruction and the alignment of the VLQ tracking system is described. The VLQ detector is then used to tag the scattered beam lepton in diffractive, elastic J/ψ-production. The cross section for diffractive, elastic J/ψ-production, is measured in the kinematic region 0.15 GeV22 GeV. (orig.)

Abstract (German)

Zur Untersuchung von Lepton-Nukleon Streuprozessen bei kleiner Virtualitaet Q2 des ausgetauschten Photons wurde im Mai 1998 ein spezielles Detektorsystem - der VLQ-Detektor (Very Low Q2) - in das H1-Experiment integriert. Dieser Detektor besteht aus zwei identischen Modulen, die jeweils aus einem Silizium-Spurdetektor und einem Szintillator-Wolfram Kalorimeter bestehen. Die Module sind oberhalb und unterhalb des Strahlrohres montiert. Der VLQ-Detektor ermoeglicht den Nachweis und die Vermessung des Strahlleptons unter kleinen Streuwinkeln. Die vorliegende Arbeit beschreibt und dokumentiert die Verfahren der Spurrekonstruktion und der Ortskalibration der Silizium-Spurdetektoren. Der VLQ-Detektor wird hier verwendet, um bei diffraktiv elastischer J/ψ-Produktion das gestreute Strahllepton nachzuweisen. Der Wirkungsquerschnitt fuer diffraktiv elastische J/φ-Produktion wird fuer einen kinematischen Bereich von 0.15 GeV22 GeV durchgefuehrt wurden. (orig.)
