Perspectives of nuclear industry in France
Description
The energy situation in France and also the attitude toward the problem are very similar to those of Japan. As fossil fuels lack, France is promoting the construction of LWR power plants on a large scale, and extensive efforts are being made in the development of the nuclear fuel cycle. Eventually, the need of FBRs is keenly appreciated. As the advantages of nuclear power, there are proven reliability and safety, secure uranium supply and low power generation cost. The total nuclear power capacity in France as of the end of 1980 was 15,400 MW, and currently it exceeded the level of 18,000 MW. It will reach the level of 65,000 MW in 1990. Review of the nuclear industry in France is made as follows: power plant manufacturing, plant siting, uranium ore mining, uranium enrichment, fuel reprocessing, waste management, FBR development, etc. (J.P.N.)
