The International Society for Magnetic Resonance in Medicine (ISMRM) recommendations on the deposition of gadolinium in the brain: a brief introduction

Description
Emerging evidences suggest increased MRI signal intensity in the brain deep nuclei,,most notably in the dentate nuclei and globus pallidus following repeated administration of gadolinium-based contrast agents. These evidences suggest the gadolinium deposition in the brain. Studies show some linear contrast agents appear to cause greater MRI signal changes than some macrocyclic agents. Based on the available evidences, The International Society for Magnetic Resonance in Medicine (ISMRM) presented recommendations for the use of gadolinium-based contrast agents, however, the adverse reactions and the clinical significance of the retained gadolinium in the brain remain unknown. Further research is needed to clarify these issues. (authors)
