Description

Southern California Edison Company (SCE) has completed a two year demonstration of Reliability Centered Maintenance (RCM) at San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station (SONGS) Unit 2. SONGS is a 3 unit site. Unit 1 is a 456 MWe pressurized Westinghouse reactor in operation since 1968. Units 2 and 3 are 1127 MWe pressurized Combustion-Engineering reactors in operation since 1984. Unit 2 is a high availability unit with steadily improving plant performance. This paper reports on RCM as an approach to preventive maintenance development and evaluation that consists of a systematic evaluation of system functions and the ways in which functions can fail, leading to the identification of applicable and effective preventive maintenance (PM) tasks with consideration for safety and economics. Considerably more detail on the background of RCM and the details of the RCM methodology is included
