Yielding capacity and accumulation of 137Cs and 90Sr by grain of different millet varieties on sod-podzolic sandy loam soil

Description

Determination of the level of accumulation of 137Cs and 90Sr by grain of different varieties of millet (Panicum miliaceum) was realized in the conditions of the Republic of Belarus. The field experiments were realized on the contaminated sod-podzolic sandy soils of Gomel region in 2008-2010. As a result of realized research it was revealed that the biological characteristics of millet resulted in relatively low parameters of the transition of 137Cs and 90Sr into grain from the medium cultivated sod-podzolic sandy soil. Studied varieties of millet varied by 1.3 -1.7 times in the 137Cs transition from sod-podzolic sandy soil into grain. Grain of different varieties of millet can be used for food purposes without restrictions. Transfer factors of 90Sr varied up to 1.5 times between the different varieties of millet. At cultivation of millet for food purposes the density of contamination by 90Sr of sod-podzolic sandy soil should be less than 30 kBq/square m (0.81 Ci/km2) for the Belarusian variety Dnieper and less than 20 kBq/square m (0.54 Ci/square km) for the variety Nadezhnoe
