Portable Radioisotope Gauges for Suspended Sediments
Description
A new type of gauge for measurement of suspended sediments is described. A gauge with a 241Am radioisotope source uses attenuation of scattered photons as a measure of sediment concentration. A theoretical and semi-empirical approach to the design of the instrument is discussed, including the influence of chemical composition of the sediment. A practical method for correcting a laboratory-made calibration curve for the changes of chemical composition of the sediment is proposed for the new probe and absorption-type 109Cd probe. Field tests of the probes in different conditions are evaluated. (author)
