Fast reactor
Description
The FBR has got a fission zone consisting of a batch of fuel boxes. Each box consists of fuel elements surrounded by a coolant such as, e.g., sodium. In order to increase the breeding rate, the interior of the boxes is divided in two sections, according to height between which a space filled with constructional material and coolant is formed. Both sections can be distinguished from one another by coolant temperature, and the fuel elements are different with respect to the kind of fuel they are charged with. The upper section shows a higher temperature. Into this section fuel elements with ceramic fuel from plutonium are preferably inserted whereas in the other section with lower temperature the fuel element charge consists of metallic uranium fuel. If full-length fuel elements are used, a zone with fertile material is arranged between these two zones. (DG)
Abstract (German)
Der FBR besitzt eine Spaltzone in Form eines Satzes von Brennstoffkassetten. Jede Kassette besteht aus Brennstoffelementen, die von einem Kuehlmittel, z.B. Natrium, umspuelt sind. Zur Erhoehung der Brutrate ist der Innenraum der Kassetten nach der Hoehe in zwei Bereiche unterteilt, zwischen denen ein mit Konstruktionsmaterial und Kuehlmittel ausgefuellter Raum ausgebildet ist. Die beiden Bereiche unterscheiden sich voneinander durch die Temperatur des Kuehlmittels und die Brennelemente durch die Art des sie ausfuellenden Brennstoffes. Der obere Bereich weist hierbei eine hoehere Temperatur auf. In diesem Bereich werden vorzugsweise die Brennelemente mit keramischem Brennstoff aus Plutonium gefuellt, waehrend im anderen Bereich mit niedrigerer Temperatur die Brennelementfuellung aus metallischem Uranbrennstoff besteht. Bei Verwendung durchgehender Brennelemente ist zwischen diesen beiden Brennstoffzonen eine Zone mit Brutstoff angeordnet. (DG)Files
