Morphology and interaction of radiation-vulcanized EPDM filled with nano-SiO2

Description

Ethylene-propylene diene terpolymer (EPDM) was vulcanized by means of 60Co γ irradiation and filled with nano-SiO2 to form SiO2-reinforced EPDM rubber. In comparison, EPDM filled with 40phr nano-SiO2 particles, which disperse homogenously in the matrix under the same condition as nano-SiO2 particles of other sizes, has better tensile strength, elongation at break and modulus. Interaction between nano-SiO2 and radiation-vulcanized EPDM rubber was characterized by Kraus equation, IR and crosslinking density analyses. The results indicated physical and chemical adsorptions in the SiO2-reinforced EPDM rubber, but the interaction might be mainly of physical adsorption. Maximum value of the interaction was obtained with the EPDM filled with 40phr nano-SiO2, which has the best mechanical properties and dispersion morphology. (authors)
