Electronuclear fuel production using high intensity accelerators
Description
This paper discusses electronuclear fuel production with particular reference to the Canadian nuclear power program. High-intensity medium-energy proton linear accelerators have a potential economic application in producing fissile fuel using the spallation process. This means of fuel production could play a major role in assuring a long term energy supply by extending uranium resources. An outline of an accelerator and target design is described and discussed in terms of engineering and technological problems. Performance characteristics of the proton accelerator and target and cost estimates for fuel production are discussed. (orig.)
Abstract (German)
In dieser Arbeit wird elektronukleare Brennstofferzeugung mit besonderem bezug auf das Canadische Kernenergieprogramm diskutiert. Lineare Protonenbeschleuniger hoher Intensitaet und mittlerer Energie haben eine moegliche wirtschaftliche Anwendung bei der Produktion von spaltbarem Material ueber den Spallations-Prozess. Dieser Art von Brennstofferzeugung koennte durch Erweiterung der Uranreserven eine groessere Rolle bei der Sicherung einer langfristigen Energieversorgung spielen. Eine Uebersicht ueber einen Beschleuniger- und Target-Entwurf wird geboten und im Hinblick auf technische und technologische Probleme diskutiert. Betriebscharakteristika des Protonenbeschleunigers und des Targets sowie Kostenabschaetzungen fuer die Brennstofferzeugung werden besprochen. (orig.)Additional details
