The chemical form of oxygen-15 in neutron-irradiated lithium sulphates

  • 1. Amsterdam Univ. (Netherlands)

Description

Some observations on the formation of O-15-sulphate ions in neutron-irradiated lithium sulphates are described. Fast-neutron irradiations were performed on Li2SO4 and Li2SO4.1H2O with D+Be neutrons of IKO synchrocyclotron. From the aqueous solution a sulphate fraction was isolated. In some cases Br2 or H2O2 was added to convert SO32- into SO42-, in other cases the oxidation was omitted with the intention of isolating only the sulphate fraction. The O-15-activities in the SrSO4 and in the irradiated salt were compared by analyzing the β-decay curves. (T.I.)
