A possible chemical method for the detection of irradiated potatoes

Description
A method for the detection of irradiated potatoes, based on changes in the absorption spectra of thiobarbiturate derivative made from aqueous extracts, has been developed. Doses as low as 6 krad can be detected up to six months after irradiation, though no estimate can be made of the dose or of the time that has elapsed since irradiation. Other methods of detection, using either 2,4-dinitrophenyl-hydrazone derivatives of carbonyl compounds or production of hydrogen peroxide, have also tested, and have been found unsatisfactory. Abstract (German)
Es wird eine Methode fuer den Nachweis von bestrahlten Kartoffeln auf Grund von Aenderungen in den Absorptionsspektren der Thiobarbituratderivate von wasserhaltigen Extrakten vorgeschlagen. Dosen bis zu 6 krad koennen 6 Monate nach Bestrahlung nachgewiesen werden. Andere Nachweismethoden, wobei entweder 2,4-Dinitrophenylhydrazin-Derivate von Carbonylverbindungen oder die Entwicklung von Wasserstoffsuperoxyd benutzt werden, sind auch geprueft und als ungenuegend befunden worden.
