Gas exchange between atmosphere and ocean

Description

The gas exchange rate and its dependance on wind velocity are determined in field measurements using the radon method. The method makes use of the fact that there is a radon deficit in the mixed layer as against radioactive equilibrium with radium. The radon method is described after a review of theoretical assumptions on gas exchange and laboratory measurements, and the complete radon balance is derived. The bilinear wind function is chosen as a functional type of relationship between gas exchange rate and wind velocity. This bilinear wind function is considered to be the best representation so far of the gas transfer rate in dependence of wind velocity. (orig./HP)

Abstract (German)

Die Gasaustauschrate und ihre Abhaengigkeit von der Windgeschwindigkeit werden mit der Radonmethode in Feldmessungen bestimmt. Die Methode nutzt aus, dass in der mixed layer durch Gasaustausch ein Radondefizit gegenueber radioaktivem Gleichgewicht mit Radium herrscht. Nach einem Ueberblick ueber theoretische Vorstellungen ueber den Gasaustausch und ueber Labormessungen wird die Radonmethode dargestellt. Die vollstaendige Radonbilanz wird abgeleitet. Als funktionelle Form des Zusammenhangs von Gasaustauschrate und Windgeschwindigkeit ( Windfunktion ) wird die bilineare Windfunktion gewaehlt. Diese kann als die bisher beste Repraesentation der Gastransferrate in Abhaengigkeit von der Windgeschwindigkeit angesehen werden. (orig./HP)
