Description

55Fe is one of the important radionuclide during characterisation of reactor wastes. Owing to its very low energy emission it can be conveniently called as Hard-to-detect (HTD) radionuclide. Separation of 55Fe from activation products in standard steel was achieved using Anion exchange process. 55Fe activity was evaluated based on the cross section data and compared with experimental value determined using Liquid Scintillation Spectroscopy and an excellent agreement was found (within 2% deviation). This methodology was adopted for separation and analysis of 55Fe in a specimen steel sample collected from shutdown research reactor APSARA. (author)
