III Dixon, M. E. ; Ford, V. L. ; Robertson, J. W. Abstract The possibility of using the techniques of surface photometry to study the mechanism which produces spiral structure is examined, and a method is proposed which employs surface color (U - B) as an age parameter and (B - V) as an indicator of interstellar absorption. The method is tested by comparing surface colors of selected regions in the major arm of the LMC with an age parameter f based on the H-R diagrams of the regions.
