Expanded model for description of the laser-induced breakdown effect in colloids

Description

Fhe equipment for LIBD for detection of colloids in aqueous systems was installed at the INE institute. As shown in earlier publications, the method is an excellent tool for characterisation of colloids in aqueous systems in terms of size and concentration. Other than the conventional scattered light methods, LIBD is capable of detecting with its high sensitivity even colloids with average diameters from 10 to 100 nm. The sensitivity of LIBD detects colloids with average diameters of 20 nm with an accuracy which is 8 orders of magnitude better than that of the scattered light techniques. (orig./CB)

Abstract (German)

Im Hinblick auf die Erfassung von Kolloiden in waessrigen Systemen wurde am INE die laserinduzierte Breakdown-Detektion (LIBD) aufgebaut. Wie in den erschienenen Publikationen ausgefuehrt ist [1-2], ist diese Methode hervorragend geeignet, Kolloide im aquatischen System hinsichtlich ihrer Konzentration und Groesse zu charakterisieren. Im Gegensatz zu den konventionellen Streulichtmethoden ist die LIBD geeignet, selbst Kolloide mit mittleren Durchmessern zwischen 10 und 100 nm mit grosser Nachweisempfindlichkeit zu detektieren. So ist die Nachweisempfindlichkeit der LIBD fuer Kolloide mit einem mittleren Durchmesser von 20 nm um rund 8 Groessenordnungen groesser als bei den Streulichtmethoden. (orig.)
