Approach to thermal equilibrium

  • 1. Oak Ridge National Lab., TN (USA)

Description

The authors determine the thermal relaxation time for the approach to thermal equilibrium by solving the Uehling-Uhlenbeck equation. The initial momentum distribution is taken to be a sphere with an outer spherical shell. It is found that thermal equilibrium is essentially reached within a time of about 40 fm/c (=1.33x10-22 sec). The order of magnitude of this relaxation time agrees with that inferred from recent deep-inelastic heavy-ion experiments. (author)
