Effects of a prolonged irradiation with low dose rate ionizing radiation on the hemopoiesis of mice

Description

SPF C3H/HeN female mice were irradiated with 137Cs γ-rays at doses of 100 - 500 mGy (100-500 days) at the dose rate of 1 mGy/22 hr/day. After irradiation, the number of hemopoietic cells in the bone marrow and the spleen were determined by the methods of CFU-S and CFU-GM assay, and the number of peripheral blood cells was also counted. No remarkable changes were observed for the number of peripheral blood cells between the control and irradiated mice. The day on which 12-CFU-S, which is in the earlist stage of differentiation, occurred decreased as the dose increased. (author)
