Magnetotactic bacteria at the geomagnetic equator

Description
Magnetotatic bacteria are observed in freshwater and marine sediments of Fortaleza, Brazil, situated close to the geomagnetic equator. Both South-seeking and North-seeking bacteria are present in roughly equal numbers in the same samples. This observation is consistent with the hypothesis that the vertical component of the geomagnetic field selects the predominant polarity type among magnetotactic bacteria in natural environments. Bacterias magnetotaticas sao observadas em agua doce e em sedimentos marinhos de Fortaleza, Brasil, situada perto do equador geomagnetico. Tanto as bacterias 'South-seeking' quanto as 'North-seeking' estao presentes em numeros aproximadamente iguais na mesma amostra. Essa observacao e consistente com a hipotese de que a componente vertical do campo geomagnetico seleciona o tipo de polaridade predominante entre as bacterias magnetotaticas em ambientes naturais.
