Description
The problem of fluid-elastic instability in confined axial flows is indeed quite complex, and still far from being solved. It is in fact of much interest for two reasons: it can be found in quite a number of industrial cases, and moreover, it makes an excellent source of questions to be raised in the field of flow induced vibrations. It is today a very active field of research, and many of the theoretical, numerical or experimental results have been published in the past 20 years. This leads to a rather complex and somewhat inconsistent set of methodologies. In this paper, the basis of the physical mechanisms of these methods will be emphasized.
