Study of inclusive and semi-inclusive correlations between charged pions in proton-proton interactions at 69GeV/c
Description
The correlations between two charged pions in the reactions pp→π-π-+X and pp→π+π-+X at 69GeV/c were studied. About 8000 inelastic events are used. It is shown that most of the inclusive correlations are produced by kinematics, reflecting the superposition of the different phase spaces associated with each topology. Nevertheless, when these longitudinal kinematical effects have been subtracted, small short range dynamical correlations are present in the central region of the interaction, as much for the first reaction as for the second reaction. On the other hand, the observation of the azimuthal asymmetry shows correlation effects in the transverse plane for the first reaction only, positively coupled with longitudinal dynamical effects. The experimental data are interpreted by an independent neutral cluster emission model. The mean mass of the clusters appears to be 2+-0.2GeV/c2 and the mean multiplicity of the charged pions from the clusters decay is 3+-0.3
