Description

A pulsed self-magnetically insulated ion diode has been investigated theoretically and experimentally. Driven by low impedance pulse lines with an impedance of 3 and 2.25 Ω and voltages from 250 keV to 1.6 MeV ion currents up to 400 kA were achieved at a generator pulse duration of 100 and 50 ns respectively. The self-magnetically insulating scheme yields a slowly varying impedance during the pulse due to the inherent negative feedback. The deflection of the ions in the diode magnetic field varies weakly with the diode potential. (orig.)
