Formation of superconducting A-15 V3Ge compound by a composite-diffusion process

  • 1. University of Wisconsin, Madison, Wisconsin 53706

Description

Superconducting A-15 V3Ge is formed by the V/Cu-Ge composite-diffusion process. Copper from the Cu-Ge alloy matrix enhances the formation of V3Ge but does not dissolve in the V3Ge. The highest transition temperature obtained, 7.1 K, is slightly higher than the value reported for arc-melted V3Ge. An off-stoichiometric composition of about 21.7 at.% Ge was found in the A-15 layer, indicating the possibility of T/sub c/ enhancement in V3Ge, as in the case of Nb3Ge
