Diagnostics of inhomogeneous plasma using the shape of spectral lines

Description

The possibility of studying nonuniformities in plasma when the spectral line is observed in one direction and the distribution of plasma parameters is defined in the same direction is investigated. The influence of particles which radiate, absorb and scatter the light in investigated spectral region on line shape is taken into account. An infinite flat slab limited by walls is considered. The total intensity of the initial sources in the medium is obtained considering the radiation transport equation in the case of isotropic self-radiators and isotropic monochromatic scattering. The general relationship between the intensity of outgoing radiation and initial radiators is derived using the Sobolev probabilistic method. The probability of photon yield is determined. A plasma in gas medium containing macroscopic particles is considered. The energy distribution of atoms can be characterized by a single temperature Ta(x) (x is a geometric coordinate inside the slab). A scatter coefficient, which describing a scatter of light from macroscopic particles σp(x) is introduced. The expression for the probability of photon survival λ and the primary source function in optical coordinates is written. It is pointed out that the information about plasma is contained in term gv characterizing the initial emission of photons caused by the self-radiation of the medium. The most important functions are the distribution of the temperature of gas and particles. The obtained relation are sufficient to find the distribution of temperature by virtue of the measured values of the escaping intensities with the known characteristics of plasma and the walls ka(x,ν), σp(x), kp(x). A practical important particular case of using spectral lines to determine the temperature distribution in the plasma with condensed dispersed phase is considered. The possibility of direct experimental measurements of optical thicknesses inside and outside the spectral line is mentioned. (V.T.)
