Technique of tritium-tagging of soil moisture for determination of ground water recharge. Some results from north eastern region of Brazil

Description

The technique of reactor produced tritium for tracing downward movement of soil moisture and its application for detemination of ground water recharge is described. Data of rainfall infiltration and the consequent recharge in purely sandy sites and one clayey site of semi-arid climate are described. Tritiated water was injected below 70-90 cm ground surface in five radially concentric points 10 cm appart. Sampling of soil was carried out after one year, at every 10 cm depth interval. Soil samples were vacuum distilled and tritium in distilled moisture was determined by liquid scintillation counting. (Author)

Descreve-se a tecnica de tracos, usando tritio como tracador para determinar recargas de agua subterranea. Apresentam-se dados sobre a infiltracao da chuva e consequente recarga de locais arenosos um lugar de terreno argiloso de clima semi arido. Agua tritiada foi injetada a 70-90 cm abaixo da superficie em cinco pontos radialmente concentricos, afastados 10 cm um do outro. Apos um ano, amostras do solo nos pontos de medicao foram coletadas e destiladas a vacuo. O tritio da mistura destilada foi determinado atraves de um contador de cintilacao liquida. (M.C.K.)
