Application of IPE to assess maintenance at power

Description

This paper presents experiences gained as a result of using the Turkey Point individual plant examination to provide probabilistic insights for maintenance practices during power operation. Turkey Point units 3 and 4 occasionally face decisions on whether to take degraded but operable equipment out of service for preventive maintenance. One factor to consider is whether, over the long run, the increase in plant risk from operating with degraded equipment is greater than that from placing the equipment in preventive maintenance. In addition, the risk of taking various redundant components out of service while in a limiting condition of operation (LCO) is quantified to determine the risk impact of maintenance at LCO conditions
