Description

A nanocrystalline ZrO2 layer was coated onto Si by using a sol-gel process. The crystallinity and the surface morphology of the layer were characterized by using X-ray diffraction and field emission-scanning electron microscopy. After the ZrO2 layer had been soaked for 5 days in a simulated body fluid, calcium phosphate was observed to form on the ZrO2 film annealed at 700 .deg. C. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy revealed that carbonate was substituted into the calcium phosphate.
