Description

Full text: The most far-reaching new technique in the research of strongly coupled gauge theories is undoubtedly the AdS/CFT correspondence which states that conformal large N gauge theories in 4 dimensions are dual to string backgrounds of the form AdS(5) x X(5) where X(5) is an Einstein manifold. Recent results from RHIC (Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider) at Stony Brook suggest that the Quark Gluon Plasma (QGP) is strongly coupled. This observation had a strong impact on the AdS/CFT community and led to new applications of the correspondence. In this talk I discuss the basic ideas of the correspondence and discuss its recent applications to the QGP and generalizations to include chemical potentials. (author)
