Description
Magnetic cross sections for transitions between J-multiplets of rare-earth ions are calculated exactly. Results for Sm3+ and Sm2+ are distinctly different, which is potentially useful in studies of samarium mixed-valence compounds. A dipole approximation to the cross section is presented that is not as reliable as its elastic counterpart. (author)
