Radiotherapy of endocrine orbitopathy. Pareses of the ocular muscle and vision losses due to delayed therapy

Description
Endocrine orbitopathy (EO) is a frequent accompanying illness of autoimmuno-hyperthyreosis, of which the severe cases desire treatment. Radiotherapy proved to be an efficient modality for local treatment of EO, and a therapy avoiding local or systemic side effects at that. Early indication of radiotherapy is recommended at stage II-III, as the efficiency and success of treatment is clearly reduced with chronic progress of the disease. (orig.)
Abstract (German)
Die endokrine Orbitopathie (EO) stellt eine haeufige Begleiterkrankung bei der Autoimmunhyperthyreose dar, die in schweren Faellen zwingend behandlungsbeduerftig ist. Die Strahlentherapie ist eine effektive Therapieform zur lokalen Behandlung der EO. Darueber hinaus ist bei einer Strahlentherapie weder mit lokalen noch mit systemischen Nebenwirkungen zu rechnen. Die Indikation zur Bestrahlung sollte deshalb ab Stadium II-III fruehzeitig gestellt werden, da bei chronischer Erkrankung die Effektivitaet deutlich nachlaesst. (orig.)Additional details
