Description
CEA/Saclay has a long standing tradition in the area of High Energy Physics, both in equipment and experiments. In the field of Superconducting magnets for accelerators, one can recall the HERA Superconducting quadrupoles, and the work presently being made on the LHC Superconducting quadrupoles. The work on the quadrupoles for the SSC HEB described below has greatly benefitted from the large experience gained by the Saclay team in the two above mentioned programs made in collaboration with DESY and CERN. The work has also benefitted from the large experience of the SSC on the collider dipole and quadrupole magnets; a common design team (Saclay/SSCL) is working on this project. The SSC quadrupoles present one new and challenging feature with respect to the HERA and LHC quadrupoles: the ramp rate (60A/S) which increases energy losses in the coils, reduces the safety margin and gives rise to unwanted multipoles
