In order to reduce the excessive increase of the oxygen/metal atomic ratio during storage of PuO and/or Pu/O mixed oxide heated in a reducing and/or inert atmosphere, the oxide is cooled to a temperature at which the rated oxygen/metal atomic ratio is not exceeded during the given storage period, and held at this temperature. Zum Vermeiden eines unzulaessig starken Ansteigens des Sauerstoff/Metall-Atomverhaeltnisses waehrend des Lagerns von in reduzierender und/oder inerter Atmosphaere erhitztem Plutoniumoxid und/oder Plutonium-Uran-Mischoxid wird dieses Oxid auf eine solche Temperatur abgekuehlt und auf dieser Temperatur gehalten, bei der das Sauerstoff/Metall-Atomverhaeltnis waehrend eines vorgegebenen Lagerungszeitraumes den vorgegebenen Wert nicht ueberschreitet.
