Environmental impact of the fly ashes from the Ajka thermal power plant, Hungary
Description
The radioactive emission of fly ashes from the thermal power plant of Ajka, Hungary is analyzed. It was found that the slag of Ajka has 40-80 times higher activity content than the surrounding soils. The concentration of 238U and its daughter products is unusually high, while that of 223Th and 40K is low. The activity of 222Rn is also considered as a hazardous effect. The excess radiation burden of the population relative to the natural background radioactivity is analyzed. A comparison of radioactivity emission of coal-based thermal and nuclear power plants is presented. (R.P.) 5 figs.; 6 tabs
