Preparing for nuclear power's second phase in the U.S

This paper reports that at some time in the future it will become unacceptable to burn combustible materials to generate electricity. When that time comes, nuclear power will probably be the best alternative, and a second phase of nuclear power development in the U.S. will be initiated. Phase 1 of the U.S. nuclear power plant construction program is essentially completed. It has resulted in the construction of more than 100 nuclear power units (approximately 100 GM of capacity) at more than 70 different sites in 34 states and operated by more than 50 different companies. A phased development of nuclear power was not originally anticipated. It has resulted from a variety of circumstances and activities which created a negative environment for nuclear power in the U.S. which led to the cessation of construction of nuclear power pants. Although the timing of the beginning of Phase 2 cannot be predicted, it will not begin until that negative environment is eliminated. I believe that it will be eliminated and therefore we should now begin planning and preparing for Phase 2
