Description
The lowest lying states of Tm2+ in CaF2 in low magnetic field, are a triplet and a singlet at + 1100 MHz. We show that the distribution of population within the triplet is determined by the 19F nuclear spin temperature Tsub(F). In addition, at very low Tsub(F)(Tsub(F) < 300 μK) the two E.P.R. lines of the triplet are shifted and narrowed, due to a local orientation of the 19F spins around the Tm2+ impurities. The magnetic disturbances created by Tm2+ can be eliminated by pumping into the non-magnetic singlet. (orig.)
