Recovery of plutonium from nitric acid- oxalic acid supernatant solutions by solvent extraction method using Aliquat- 336

  • 1. Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Mumbai (India). Fuel Chemistry Div.

Description

A solvent extraction process has been developed for recovery of plutonium (IV) from large volumes of nitric acid-oxalic acid plutonium supernatant solutions. In this process 20% Aliquat- 336 in xylene is used as extractant for Pu(IV) in presence of large excess of Al3+ ions. The extracted Pu(IV) is back extracted with ammonium carbonate solution. Using this process more than 35 litres of plutonium oxalate supernatant solutions are processed batch wise. The overall recovery of plutonium is more than 95%. Repeated use of Aliquat- 336 is found satisfactory for the extraction of Pu(IV). The aqueous waste generated after removal of plutonium by this method is directly disposable.
