Developing National Energy Strategy for introduction of Nuclear Power Tunisia Case Study

  • 1. Head of Nuclear Power Plant Project, (Tunisia)

Description

Tunisian Electricity and Gas Company (STEG) is a vertically integrated state owned company. It has the monopoly of transmission and distribution of electricity and gas. On November 2006, Tunisian Government charged the state owned Electricity Utility (STEG) to conduct the preliminary studies for nuclear power introduction in collaboration with the Ministry of Higher Education, Scientific Research and Technology (in charge of the nuclear applications promotion). Another factor in favor of nuclear power consideration at that period was the renaissance of nuclear power industry almost 20 years after Chernobyl. A Strategic Action Plan (SAP) was elaborated following the 19 infrastructure issues of the 3 milestones recommended by IAEA (NG-G.3.1) to determine our targets and objectives to achieve our goal. Due to the Tunisian context since 2011, Nuclear Power Program has been postponed to 2030. Financing is one of the main issues especially in the current context of the country. The feasibility Study recommended some technologies. The different law projects and decrees have to be approved by legislative authority. Further progress in nuclear power program is tributary of: Creation of TSNA, creation of NNEA and further support to nuclear engineering students and Preparation of call for tenders
