Tritium analysis in natural waters: experimental characteristics of the electrolitic enrichment system of the Chemical Department - Sao Carlos Federal University
Description
The working conditions of a system for low-level tritium analyses in natural waters were determined using eletrolytic enrichment and liquid scintillation counting techniques. The system installed at the Departamento de Quimica - UFScar is characterized by the following experimental parameters: (a) sample volume reduction factor during eletrolysis = 16.7; (b) tritium recovery factor = 80%; (c) tritium enrichment factor = 13.4; (d) counting efficiency = 12.5%; (e) background level = 11.5 cpm; (f) counting time per sample = 500 minutes; (g) sensitivity = 8.3 TU/cpm; (h) lower detection limit = 3.6 TU + - 50% and (i) analytical capacity = 30 samples/month. It is also discussed the suitability of the analytical system in terms of rain and ground water samples as well. (Author)

As condicoes de trabalho de um sistema para analise de tritio ambiental em aguas naturais foram determinadas usando-se tecnicas combinadas de enriquecimento eletrolitico e contagem por espectrometria de cintilacao liquida. O sistema que se encontra instalado no Departamento de Quimica da UFSCar pode ser caracterizado pelos seguintes parametros experimentais: (a) fator de reducao de volume na eletrolise = 16.7; (b) fator de recuperacao de 3H = 80%; (c) fator de enriquecimento de tritio = 13,4; (d) eficiencia de medicao = 12,5%; (e) contagem de fundo = 11,5 cpm; (f) tempo de medicao por amostra = 500 minutos; (g) sensibilidade = 8,3 UT/cpm; (h) limite inferior de deteccao = 3,6 UT + - 50% e (i) capacidade analitica do sistema = 30 amostras/mes. Sao tambem apresentadas condicoes sobre a aplicabilidade do sistema de analise em termos de aguas pluviais brasileiras, bem como aguas subterraneas. (Autor)Additional details
