Collisions between multiply charged ions and atoms resulting in radiation and autoionization

Description

Collisions between multiply charged ions and atoms (molecules) which result in emission of photons and formation of slow ions and electrons are discussed. These are observed by means of optical, condensor plate and electrostatic analyser systems. One and two electron capture processes with a potential curve crossing between about 3 and 10 a.u. are most important in the velocity region of interest, v approximately 0.5 a.u. Attention is given to the principal and azimuthal quantum number of the singly excited projectile states formed and to the different kinds of autoionization mechanisms. (Auth.)
