On the basis of the invited and contributed papers to this session, the paper assesses the need for radioactive waste disposal at intermediate depths. It examines the nature of the waste types that would benefit from disposal at intermediate depth and examines the advantages and disadvantages of the concept. Finally, it explores the need for specific safety requirements and guidance for this category of disposal facility. (author)
