Photon mass at low temperature

  • 1. California Univ., Santa Cruz (USA)

Description

The conjecture that gauge symmetries could be broken at sufficiently low temperature and the possibility of testing the hypothesis by measurement of the non-zero photon mass at such temperatures, are considered. The consequences of this conjecture on the breakdown of both the U(1) symmetry of QED and the SU(3) symmetry of the strong interactions (QCD) at low temperatures and its possible application to gravitation, are discussed.
