An experimental probe of bonding nature in rare earth metal doped fullerenes

Description
The bonding nature between metals and fullerene molecules has been experimentally probed using x-ray analysis. The Maximum entropy method (MEM) based on the Rietveld analysis was performed on the synchrotron x-ray diffraction pattern of nominal Sm3C70 to estimate the electron density distribution (EDD). The estimated EDD of Sm3C70 unambiguously demonstrated a covalent Sm-C bond. Furthermore, the Sm bridges two C70 molecules, producing a C70-Sm-C70 dimer structure
