Description
The 1300 MW William H. Zimmer Generating Station is the first nuclear to coal conversion project. This article covers the basis for conversion and highlights advances in mechanical components and systems in this unique plant. Of special note will be the integration of the new 975 MVA two casing topping turbine generator set and the original nuclear low pressure turbine generator set to form this hybrid unit. Both separate and combined support systems and controls for this cross-compound unit will be mentioned. The huge crossover pipe system used to tie the machines together is also unique. Its special features will be discussed. The Checkout Group and Start-Up Team formulated for the project will be covered. Significant original system refurbishment, equipment start-up, monitoring, and inspection activities together with problems encountered and their resolutions through initial full load operation are included
