Savannah River Site spent aluminum clad fuel disposition options

Description
The U.S. Department of Energy is currently assessing options to safely and efficiently dispose of spent nuclear fuel while satisfying national nonproliferation policies. The Savannah River site (SRS) has a significant quantity (∼7.8 tonnes U) of highly enriched aluminum clad fuel, predominantly SRS production reactor fuel, in basin storage. In addition, two environmental impact statement actions could bring in ∼36,000 materials test reactor equivalent (MTRE) fuel elements (∼26.3 tonnes U) over the next 40 yr. This report describes management options and life cycle costs of the options
