Signal averaging applied to positron emission tomography

Description

A technique for inter-subject averaging of positron emission tomographic images employing stereotactic anatomical standardization was developed and tested in the context of functional brain mapping, using intrasubject pairs of blood flow images. Noise (control-control comparisons) was progressively suppressed by averaging, as predicted. Signal (stimulus-control comparisons) was stable in both magnitude and location. Signal:noise, therefore, rose steadily with averaging
