Some specifics of the risk analyses for Pebble Bed Modular Reactor

  • 1. PRA Group, Pebble Bed Modular Reactor, PBMR (Pty.) Ltd., P.O. Box 9396, 0046 Centurion (South Africa)

Description

The paper presents the main results of the comparison between the Probabilistic Risk analyses (PRA), as performed for Light Water Reactors (LWR) and the PRA undergoing for gas reactors of Pebble Bed Module Reactor (PBMR) type. The main features of PRA as the most used risk analysis tool were investigated in order to define the specifics of their use for PBMR and a more detailed list of the impact these specific and generic features have on the PRA process are presented. The paper underlines the fact that the usual approach of 3 levels for LWR PRA is not applicable to the PBMR PRA due to the design specifics of the PBMR. The emphasis on passive features and systems to designated to assure the necessary safety margins and the defined risk levels are impacting on the PRA philosophy for PBMR. The concepts of consequences are used in PBMR PRA instead the Core Damage frequency (CDF) or Large Early Release Frequency (LERF). Paper presents also the specifics of each PRA phase and task for PBMR, as they were used during various PRA phases for PBMR
