Hanford in-situ vitrification test produces record size glass block

Description

Pacific Northwest Laboratory has carried out an in-situ vitrification test at the US DoE's Hanford site where the soil is contaminated with wastes from a former decontamination facility. This is the first time a site containing both radioactive and hazardous chemical materials has been subjected to full-scale in-situ vitrification. The waste consisted of grapefruit sized rocks, radioactive caesium and strontium and non-radioactive lead and chromium. (author)
